Quick checks

Try these before you ring

You might fix it yourself. If so, great. If not, we’re a call away.

Water is gushing in

First, shut off the stopcock. You’ll usually find it under the kitchen sink, in a cupboard downstairs, or by the front door if you live in a flat. Turn it clockwise as far as it will go. Next, run the cold taps so the pipes empty. Nothing else you can do will save more of your home.

The ceiling is dripping or bulging

Keep out from under it, and leave the light switches and fittings in that room alone. If the water is anywhere near electrics, switch the power off at the consumer unit and keep it off. Then give us a ring.

You can’t see where it’s coming from

Shut the stopcock, then keep an eye on your water meter if you have one. Still ticking over? Then the leak sits before the stopcock, and it’s probably for the water company to fix rather than you. Mention it when you ring. It can save a wasted trip.

The taps have run dry

Before you ring, ask next door if they have water. If the whole street is off, it’s a mains problem for Thames Water and no plumber can sort it. We’ll tell you that honestly instead of charging you to come out.

Your questions

What people ask us

Will someone really pick up at night?

Yes. Our emergency callout runs 24/7. The office itself is open 8:00 to 17:30, Monday to Friday. Outside those times, your call goes through to whoever is on call.

How do I know if it’s an emergency?

If water is actively damaging your home, or you’re without water or heating and can’t wait, that’s an emergency. A dripping tap isn’t. We’d much rather book that in as a normal job than charge you emergency rates.

What will an emergency callout cost me?

You’ll get a price before the engineer starts, and that includes out of hours. We never begin a job and then tell you the cost once it’s done.

Is it better to ring or fill in the form?

In an emergency, always ring. We check the form in office hours, so it’s best for quotes and jobs that can wait.
