Water meter installation in London, and moving existing meters
Before you pay anyone for water meter installation in London, know this: your water company will fit a meter for free if it can. What it won’t do is change your pipework, split a shared supply or move a meter for a new kitchen. That’s where we come in. And if the free route works for you, we’ll point you to it.

- Relocating a meter that’s already inside

- Getting into and repairing boundary boxes
- A new stopcock fitted on the same visit
- Replacing the supply pipe when that’s what is holding things up
- Connecting extensions and new builds to the water main
A few things to check
A quick look might sort it without us. We’re happy to say so.
The meter itself costs you nothing
Thames Water and the other suppliers fit meters at no cost where the supply allows. Ask them first. Call us when they’ve visited and said they can’t do it, or when something needs moving.
Shared supplies usually get in the way
Many Victorian houses that became flats still have one supply pipe feeding several homes. Each flat can’t have its own meter until that pipe is split, and the split is the real work. Get to grips with it before you decide whether a meter is worth it.
Change the stopcock while you’re at it
With the pipework already open, now is the time to replace a stopcock that’s stiff, dripping or stuck. Leave it, and everything has to be drained down a second time later.
Rule out a leak before you switch
If your supply has a hidden underground leak, a meter means you pay for every drop of it. Turn everything off and watch the meter before you sign up, or ask us to trace it first.
Questions we get a lot
Do you fit the actual meter?
No. The meter is owned and installed by the water company. We carry out the pipework that makes it possible, and we move meters that are already inside your home.
Is a water meter worth it for me?
As a rough guide, if your home has fewer people than bedrooms, a meter normally works out cheaper. Most suppliers have a calculator you can use, and they let you switch back within a set time.
I live in a flat on a shared supply. What are my options?
The supply has to be split into separate runs before each flat can have its own meter. It’s a proper job and usually needs the freeholder to agree, so get a price before you promise anything to your neighbours.
Can my meter be moved for a new kitchen?
Yes, as long as the new spot is sensible and easy to read. Tell us where the units will go and we’ll tell you what can be done.
