Shower pump installation in London for weak showers

Got a shower fed from a tank in the loft? A pump can turn it into something worth standing under. Got a shower running straight off a combi boiler? That can’t be pumped, whatever anyone tries to sell you. So before any shower pump installation in London, our first job is working out which system you have.

A few things to check

A quick look might sort it without us. We’re happy to say so.

Combi boilers can’t be pumped

A combi heats mains water as you use it, and you’re not allowed to pump the mains supply into a home. If your combi shower is weak, the fix lies elsewhere: the supply pipe, a half-closed valve or a scaled-up shower head.

Positive or negative head really matters

The answer depends on the height of your cold tank above the shower outlet. Get the type wrong and you’ll have a pump that never kicks in, or one that never switches off. More replacement pumps fail within months for this reason than any other.

Pumps make noise, so placement counts

Where the pump sits makes all the difference. Fixed to a joist under a bedroom, everyone in the house will hear it. Mounted on a solid base with anti-vibration feet and a flexible hose either side, it’s just a hum from the airing cupboard.

Air is a pump’s worst enemy

Air drawn in through the tank feed is behind most early pump failures. The make you pick matters less than getting that feed right on the day it’s installed.

Asked and answered

Questions we get a lot

Is a shower pump possible in my flat?

That depends on how it’s fed. With a stored cold tank and a hot cylinder, yes. With a combi or an unvented mains-pressure system, no, though there’s usually another way to get a better shower.

My pump keeps running after the shower is off. Why?

Most often a valve that lets water by, or a dripping outlet, keeps the flow switch on. Now and then it’s the pump. Get it fixed soon, because running on is what burns pumps out.

What lifespan should I expect from a shower pump?

Expect years rather than decades. The way it was installed sets its lifespan more than the price you paid: the feed, the mounting and the head type do most of the deciding.

Can you quieten the pump I’ve got?

Usually. Most of the noise goes once the pump sits on anti-vibration mounts with flexible hoses, away from any surface that amplifies it. Often nothing needs replacing at all.
