Drinking water & scale

Water filtration systems and limescale control in London

Thinking about a water filtration system in London? Start by knowing what you’re buying. Filtering, softening and scale reduction get lumped together, but they’re three different jobs. Filters improve your drinking water. Softeners alter the water chemistry everywhere in the house. Scale reducers do less than either. This page covers filters and softeners, plus an honest take on scale reducers.

A few things to check

A quick look might sort it without us. We’re happy to say so.

A filter doesn’t soften, and a softener doesn’t filter

A filter removes things from your water, like sediment, chlorine and odd tastes. A softener changes the minerals behind scale. If your issue is furred kettles and crusty taps, a drinking filter won’t help. If it’s the taste, a softener won’t fix that either.

Scale reducers aren’t softeners

Electronic and magnetic conditioners come with big claims and a hard sell. What they don’t do is remove hardness. Some people find they help downstream, but don’t buy one hoping for softener results. Saying so costs us the bigger sale, and we’ll say it anyway.

Budget for cartridges

Every filter has a lifespan, and one left in too long is worse than having none at all. Whatever you have fitted, agree up front how often it needs changing and what that costs.

Start with what’s bothering you

Taste, sediment, scale and smell each have their own fix. Tell us the real problem and we’ll tell you which option helps. Sometimes the answer is none of them.

Asked and answered

Questions we get a lot

Should I get a filter or a softener?

It depends on the problem. Taste and drinking water point to a filter. Scale in the kettle, the shower and the boiler points to a softener. Plenty of London homes have both, with a filtered hard tap kept for drinking.

Is filtration necessary in London?

London’s tap water is safe to drink as it is. Filters are about taste, chlorine and sediment, not safety. In an older building with old pipes inside, a sediment filter can make a difference you can see.

How often should cartridges be changed?

Usually every six to twelve months, depending on the filter and how much water you use. We can book it in as a regular visit so you don’t have to remember.

Does a filter stop limescale?

An ordinary filter won’t. A softener will. A scale reducer helps a little, and not everywhere in your home. We won’t pretend otherwise to make a sale.
