Water softener installation for London homes
Need water softener installation in London? You’re in the right place. Most of the city sits on chalk, so the water from your tap is hard. That hardness shortens your boiler’s life, furs up your shower and leaves scale wherever it lands. A softener tackles the cause instead of chasing the symptoms. We can size and fit a new one, or service the one you already have.

What the job involves
- A softener sized to your household and fitted
- A bypass valve, so you keep running water while it’s serviced
- Drain and overflow pipework that meets the regulations
- One unsoftened tap kept for drinking and cooking
- Repairs, resin checks and servicing on existing units
- A scale reducer instead, if there’s no room for a full softener
A few things to check
A quick look might sort it without us. We’re happy to say so.
It’s not you, it’s the water
Over most of the Thames Water area, your water is rated hard or very hard. So if your kettle furs up within months and the shower screen never comes up clean, don’t blame your cleaning. Blame the water.
The location sets the difficulty
The softener goes on your rising main, just after the stopcock and ahead of everything else. It also needs a drain close by. Most end up under the kitchen sink. If the main runs through a garage or utility room, that’s often simpler. Let us know where your stopcock is, and we can normally answer over the phone.
Keep one tap on hard water
Because softened water carries more sodium, it’s best to drink, cook and fill the kettle from unsoftened water. So we leave one tap on the hard supply, and that tap comes as standard, not as an extra.
Salt is your only real running cost
Most machines will take block or tablet salt, and block is easier to lift. A typical home only goes through a few pounds a month. If you’re offered a softener that never needs salt, it’s really a scale reducer, and that’s a different product.
Questions we get a lot
Will a water softener look after my boiler?
It stops fresh scale building up in the heat exchanger, which is where hard water does its most costly damage. Scale that’s already there stays put, though. Clearing that out is a separate job.
Does a softener need a drain?
It does. A softener rinses itself through on a regular cycle, and that water needs somewhere to go. In most homes, the drain is what decides where the unit ends up.
I already have a softener. Can you service it?
Of course, even if someone else fitted it. Usually the fault is salt bridging, a blocked injector or a valve, not the resin. All of those can be repaired.
Will I actually feel the difference?
Soap and shampoo lather more, and the shower screen stays clear. If your skin is very sensitive, you may notice a change there too. The benefit you won’t see is the scale that no longer builds up inside your boiler.
