Cylinders & immersions

Hot water cylinder installation and servicing in London

Most people forget about their cylinder until the hot water stops. We carry out hot water cylinder installation in London on both types: vented cylinders fed by a tank in the loft, and unvented ones running at mains pressure, along with the immersion heaters and controls on each. We replace them, size them correctly and service the ones still going.

A few things to check

A quick look might sort it without us. We’re happy to say so.

Unvented work is notifiable

An unvented cylinder is a pressurised vessel. Fitting or servicing one needs a specific qualification on top of general plumbing skills. Ask anyone you’re thinking of using to show you theirs. For this work it’s a fair question, and a good installer won’t mind.

Bathrooms decide the size, not square metres

Floor area isn’t the guide. Think about how many showers and taps might be on at once, and how many people need a shower in the same hour. One bathroom in a big house calls for a smaller cylinder than three bathrooms in a small one.

No hot water? It may not be the cylinder

If your system is vented, the culprit is very often the immersion heater or its thermostat. Both parts are cheap, so they should be ruled out before anyone talks about a new cylinder. We check them first.

The airing cupboard may not be the best spot any more

Modern insulated cylinders lose very little heat, so the cupboard round them no longer dries clothes the way it used to. If you’re short on space, the cylinder can often move somewhere more useful.

Asked and answered

Questions we get a lot

Should I choose vented or unvented?

For most modern refits, unvented makes sense: mains pressure at every tap and no loft tank. If your current tank and pressure already do the job, vented is fine, simpler, and cheaper to maintain.

Would a combi boiler be better?

It can be. Going combi frees the cupboard and removes the loft tank, but a combi struggles if two showers are on together. That often makes it the better answer for a one-bathroom flat, and usually the wrong one for a family house with three bathrooms.

My hot water is only lukewarm. What’s wrong?

Often it’s a faulty cylinder thermostat, an immersion element on its way out, or a heating coil coated in scale. We can work out which without replacing the cylinder.

How often does a cylinder need a service?

Unvented cylinders need checking every year, mainly because of the expansion vessel and safety valves. Vented ones need much less, though it’s worth checking the immersion and thermostat at your boiler service.
