Dishwasher plumbing in London kitchens

A dishwasher needs a cold water feed, a valve to isolate it, and a waste connection with an air break. When we’re called out for dishwasher plumbing in London, it’s usually that waste. Without a high loop on the hose, sink water can run back into the machine, or the machine empties itself as it fills.

A few things to check

A quick look might sort it without us. We’re happy to say so.

Most problems start at the waste

Before the drain hose drops to the trap, it should rise in a loop above the machine. Leave that out and one of two things happens: dirty water from the sink finds its way back in, or the machine siphons itself empty and never washes properly.

Integrated machines need a precise gap

Built-in dishwashers leave very little room for error, and the pipes need to sit in the space behind, not where the machine goes. If your kitchen is being fitted, get the pipework in place before the units arrive.

One valve, just for the dishwasher

You’d be surprised how many dishwashers don’t have one. Every machine should have its own small valve on the cold feed, so it can be pulled out or replaced without draining anything.

Standing water isn’t always a blocked drain

Water sitting in the bottom could be a clogged filter, a kinked hose or the waste connection, not the drain itself. Check the simple things first. We’ll talk you through them before booking a visit.

Asked and answered

Questions we get a lot

Do you fit integrated dishwashers?

We do, and we’ll fit the decor door too, as long as the hinges and template allow. Tell us the model and the opening size, and we’ll explain what’s involved.

What stops a dishwasher draining?

Usually it’s the filter or the waste hose, not the machine. If your sink is slow to drain too, the shared waste is the problem, and that’s a drain job rather than an appliance one.

Can my dishwasher share the sink waste?

It can, and that’s the normal way to do it. The hose connects to a spigot on the sink trap, with a high loop above. The one thing to avoid is it discharging below the water line in the trap.

Can you supply the dishwasher?

No. Buy your machine wherever it’s cheapest and we’ll plumb it in. That usually works out better for you than paying a trade markup on the appliance.
