Sump pump installation for London basements
London clay holds on to water. If your basement sits below the water table, some will get in, whatever the walls are built from. A sump and pump give that water a set place to collect and a controlled route out. We handle sump pump installation in London, replace pumps that have failed, and service the ones hiding under a cover you’ve never lifted.

A few things to check
A quick look might sort it without us. We’re happy to say so.
A pump won’t damp-proof your basement
It deals with water once it’s in, not with keeping it out. If you’re turning a basement into living space, the pump is one piece of a tanking and drainage plan. It can’t stand in for one.
One pump can let you down
If one pump is all you have in a basement nobody visits, a flood is how you’ll find out it has stopped. Add a second pump on a higher float, or at least a high-water alarm. It’s worth far more than the extra it costs.
The law cares where the water goes
Groundwater goes to a surface water drain or a soakaway, never the foul sewer. Send it the wrong way and you may get a bill from the water company, rather than a fine from someone else.
Test it in September, not in a storm
In September, tip a bucket of water into the sump and check it pumps out. A pump that sat dry all summer with its float stuck is one of the most common autumn callouts.
Questions we get a lot
Is a backup pump really necessary?
It depends what’s down there. A lived-in basement, things you’d hate to lose, or a space you can’t check daily all call for one. An empty cellar with a concrete floor may only need an alarm.
How often does a sump pump need servicing?
Once a year, with a couple of hand tests in between. A service mainly means cleaning the chamber, checking the float moves freely and making sure the non-return valve still seals.
Can the pump empty into the drain outside?
Usually, if it’s a surface water drain. Usually not, if it’s a foul drain. So our first check is which kind you’ve got outside.
Heavy rain floods my basement. Will a pump fix it?
Sometimes. Other times, water is getting in somewhere it shouldn’t and a pump only treats the symptom. We’ll tell you which it is, even if that means a bigger job than a pump.
