Pumped toilets & waste

Saniflo and macerator pump installation across London

A macerator lets you have a toilet where the soil pipe can’t reach, like a basement, a loft conversion or the space under the stairs. When it’s the only option, it works well. When it was picked to dodge a slightly harder job, it works badly. We handle Saniflo and macerator installation in London, plus servicing and unblocking, and we’ll be honest about which situation you’re in.

A few things to check

A quick look might sort it without us. We’re happy to say so.

Only three things should go in

Toilet paper, waste and water: that’s the full list. Wipes are out, including the “flushable” kind, along with sanitary products, cotton buds and kitchen roll. When we’re called to a macerator that has stopped, one of those is nearly always to blame.

Use a macerator only when you have to

If a normal gravity run to the soil stack is doable at a fair price, choose that. There’s nothing in it to break, it uses no electricity and it makes no noise. We’ll point you that way when it’s possible, even though it means a smaller job for us.

Power, access and warmth

Plan for three things: a fused spur for power, enough access to remove the unit for servicing, and a frost-free spot. Seal it in for good behind tiles and you’ll regret it the first time someone needs to get at it.

Regular descaling keeps it going

London’s hard water leaves scale on the blades and the pressure switch, and that’s what kills most units. Descaling once or twice a year costs little and roughly doubles how long it lasts.

Asked and answered

Questions we get a lot

What can go down a macerator toilet?

Toilet paper, water and human waste, and that’s all. The single biggest cause of failures we see is “flushable” wipes, which don’t break down like paper.

Why does mine keep running, or start by itself?

Usually the toilet’s flush valve is leaking a trickle of water into the unit, or the pressure switch has scaled up. Both can be fixed, and both waste electricity and shorten the unit’s life if left.

How long will a macerator last?

With regular descaling and sensible use, a good many years. With wipes going in, it can be months. The make matters far less than what gets flushed.

Can I use one for a toilet in a loft conversion?

Yes. A loft conversion is exactly where they earn their place. You’ll need the pumped waste to reach a soil stack, plus power and access for the unit, and all of that is easier to plan before the room is finished.
